There are thousands of wonderful, varied, and sometimes adventurous "Bed & Breakfasts" in Britain. They are an economical, and interesting way to meet your need for accommodation, and they are a great way to meet the people -- both your hosts, and often other tourists, as well.
I remember one night in a B&B at the foot of Ben Nevis when a small group of tourists from Canada, Germany, and the US sat enthralled by the fireplace while old Mrs McIntyre, our hostess, regaled us with stories of life on a nearby estate where her husband was a "ghillie" (a sort of game warden). It was like a real-life episode of "Upstairs, Downstairs". Then she got onto Scottish history and let us have it with both barrels her colourful and articulate opinions of The Black Douglas, Charles Edward Stewart, and a quite a few others. . . I think MacBeth was about the only one left out of her diatribe. You just don't get experiences like that at a Holiday Inn!
If you are travelling to Scotland, check out "Perthshire Accommodation". You'll find many lovely and interesting B&Bs that will "make" your holiday.
