Driving In Britain

-- Lines (Painted Rattlesnakes)

One of the first things you'll notice driving out of the airport is that road signs in Britain look different. But here's something you won't notice until folk start angrily "tooting" at you...

THE WHITE LINES PAINTED ON THE ROAD ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE SIGNS!

In North America traffic signs and traffic lights are pretty much in your face all the time. In Britain, they depend more upon painted road markings. I call them Painted Rattlesnakes because they are easy for we gringos to overlook, but it is deadly to ignore them, or to step on them by accident. THEY ARE VITAL TO SAFETY! Here's an example...

The Deadly Dash

A broken or dashed white line (or double dashed white line as shown here) painted across your part of the road is like a sleeping rattlesnake waiting for you to step on it! These Deadly Dashes lurk mostly at intersections where they indicate that YOU must now Give Way (yield) at this point.

To the British this is perfectly clear, but painted lines seem insignificant to North Americans accustomed to big signs and flashing lights. That's what makes these dashed white sidewinders so deadly... they are easy to overlook, but loaded with danger. Treat them as you would a "Yield" sign back home.

There may or may not be a warning triangle painted on the road and/or a GIVE WAY sign.
